Across the country AGAIN?

An article I just read in Homeschooling magazine got me all jazzed up about exploring the country AGAIN. This woman took her 7 kids across the country without her husband (he flew out to Colorado to meet up with them at one point) Anyway, it was a coast-to-coast camping trip except for the time they spent in a hotel when it was raining in Kansas or something. They deliberately AVOIDED big cities and they focused on locations that had historical significance. They stayed mostlya t state parks and national parks and since they were homeschoolers, the entire experience was replete with field guides and all sorts of other digging-deeper experiences, like tours of historic homes and foraging foe wild foods on occasion.

I can’t imagine my older kids enjoying a trip like that but I would. And since we’re no longer feeling inclined to spend a bunch of time with the East Coast family (except my Grandma) we can just explore the area carefree. I found a cool site for Indoor Water Parks in Virginia and my kids have never stayed at one before. So I’m thinking maybe we will take a look at the calendar and see when we can do this. It’s so cheap to rent a van and camp compared to the RV experience we had last summer.

I’m definitely not into any more 14 week trips and I wouldn’t dream of asking my husband to go beyond his comfort level again. I could even do it solo. Shoot, that would be so much fun. This land is beautiful, it’s a shame more people aren’t into exploring this country. Oh well, what are your plans next summer?

House in Order

We’ve been doing a lot to get the house in order. When mom left it to us in the will I thought it would be totally fine but you know, it had been faced with years of neglect that we didn’t even realize. I can’t imagine how we didn’t realize this place needed so much work but we got started as soon as we moved in to try and get it livable, at least in our eyes. I decided not too long ago that I would get adt rhode island for the place and I would also hire someone to paint and maybe even decorate even if we had a little money left over in the budget. My husband was great and really helped a lot which was needed because a lot of what we had to do was do heavy lifting. I think the place is pretty much caught up to where we wanted it to be and we’re even thinking of moving ourselves in soon to try and start a new life!
